Suggested Fly Patterns for American River

Rainbow Trout and half pounder Steelhead are found in the lower American River all year with the greatest concentrations occurring during
the fall and spring.  Standard trout fly fishing tactics work on the American, but do to the relatively large size of the water, swinging techniques,
both spey and overhand, are the preferred methods of fishing.  Dry flies are very effective in the spring when the Caddis hatches can become
quite dense, particularly in the evenings.  Winter run (spawing) Steelhead are in the river between December and March with Shad and Stripers in the spring.
